Research and Advocacy Centre for Environment (RACE) has chosen Senera villages under Raghunathpur-I block of Purulia district for instituting a sustainable rural development. The objective of the initiative is to develop the selected villages in an integrated manner; that include enhancement of potentiality of physical resources, farm and nonfarm based economic development, and other aspects of social development. The plan aims at developing the villages in such a manner that it becomes a ‘replicable model’ for holistic development in the district.

Intervene in Creating Model Village
The RACE has physical presence with field office at project area of Senera village equipped with basic infrastructures and manpower and volunteers. The main goal of RACE is to develop a significant framework for planned management of natural resources in the villages
Environmental Perspective Plan to “Reinstate the Glory of City of Joy”
Urban areas are extremely complicated environmental settings, where health and well-being of an individual and population govern by a large number of bio-physical, socio-economical, and inclusive aspects. Featuring speedy growth and development, the urban areas of Kolkata is confronting with mushrooming population. In Kolkata Metropolitan Area, the environment is increasingly under pressure with the shortage in housing provision. A significant urban population resides in slums. Unsafe, unsecure, and unsanitary living conditions; lack of basic services; and exclusion from participation in developmental process continue to worsen the health and economic productivity of urban poor who could not afford basic facilities. These informal settlers or slum dwellers are sufferer of environmental degradation. Inevitable parts of the city as well as urban environment, the slums are one of the major challenges for urban environment planning and management. These vulnerable entities are anthropogenic environmental problem for the city in general and specifically for its inhabitants.
A comparative impact analysis between physical environment and socio-economical environment may guide in prioritization of issues that could lead to a sustainable plan of action through participatory and inclusive planning.
Goal:
The goal of the plan is to create a “Clean and Green Kolkata” and urges each citizen of Kolkata to take responsibility and nurture it for long term sustainability. A clean and green Kolkata will meet all the challenges of climate change effectively and comprehensively for future generation.
Objectives:
The major objectives of the project are:
- To enhance the environmental quality by improving sanitation standards promotion of the culture of “litter free” and optimum utilization of sources.
- To re-organize and modernization of technologies in garbage management including segregation at sources and launching through concept of Re-Use and Re-Cycle.
- To create awareness and guidelines among poor people to address climate change.
- To minimize the Green House Gas Emission by adopting proven technologies.
- To develop community and public partnership and participation of private entrepreneurs and local institutions to safeguards the environment of Kolkata.
- To enhance infrastructural services for secure clean water and sanitation facilities.
- To develop community led management system for monitoring the situation on a daily basis.
- To develop self reliance among urban poor including youth and women.
